Pensions Bill is landmark settlement for the future

The Pensions Bill was published today, 29 November 2006. John Hutton, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, launched the Bill at an event in London.

He said, "The Bill we publish will put into legislation the foundations, I believe, for a long-term, sustainable pensions system - certainly a simpler and more generous state pension, which I think is absolutely fundamental."

The Bill would make the state pension more generous by linking the Basic State Pension to earnings; make the system fairer for women and carers; and provide a solid foundation for saving.

The Pensions Bill had its first reading on 28 November and was published on 29 November.
